"¿Qué hiciste?" The scrawny young man seems to register the barely concealed confusion on Michael's face and it prompts him to try harder still to engage him. From where he is propped against a barren concrete wall like a shell of a real person, his voice becomes louder. "What you do to end up in here, hermano?"

Michael squints through the blue lacquer of shadows, trying to decipher the inmate's hollow features, trying to decipher a single coherent answer as he relives the metal of the incriminating weapon weighted heavily in his hand. The literal smoking gun.

Michael sees Sara's face then; the implicit trust that he'd longed for from the very beginning and knows that, had the tables been turned, he would have pulled the trigger for her, just as she had for him. He sees the sorrowful brown eyes and tear-stained cheeks and can almost smell her sun-warmed skin permeating his memory to fill Sona's dank innards.

When Michael finally speaks, his jaw feels rusty, his tongue dry, his words mechanical and matter-of-fact. In reality, they are a revelation that makes him tremble under layers of soaked clothing and the indifference he wears like his only armor.

"I fell in love."
